Because our brains are used to people talking and what happens in a normal conversation then over edited is stilted and unrealistic. And I think as a podcaster I’m trying to build a relationship with my listeners so I don’t want to come over as “perfect”. Mistakes (if not too many) are part of life and actually rather than distract they draw the listener in more. The more I try different podcasts, the more I find I continue with the natural ones.

The first episode was heavy editing. By the second I was comfortable leaving in some ums and when my dog barked in the background simply joked she was agreeing (it is a podcast on emerging and transboundary diseases!). By the third I recorded a monologue while out for a hike so am comfortable with the background noise ending to authenticity and left in the moment after 10 miles (I wasn’t recording the whole time) when I couldn’t think of the right words. I now see a podcast as a chat with the listener rather than a radio show. This means it should be more natural and less editing. Work out what is distracting and what adds emotion, edit accordingly.

I’ve been podcasting for a few years now and have surgically been removing all the ums – I just edited with your suggestions and I LOVE it! This will be life-changing for me. Thanks so much for your post! Will also check out the tool you mentioned!

Now if I were to make one, I would for sure follow what you have suggested and edit them. I’d want to remove any mistakes or stumbling so that way, whoever is listening can have a smooth experience. I’ll have to find some that do that and probably go with them.
